MLF Ingredients Sdn Bhd, a company under Lam Tak group of companies, and together with its sister companies, optimize value from food recycling, through innovative and sustainable solutions. Our main business is in transforming food waste and food by-products from factories into animal feed, and organic fertilizer. We take huge pride in our contribution to help reduce food wastage thereby contributing to a greener environment. In 1965, Lam Tak Partnership was incorporated in Singapore, and began distributing wheat by-products to farms and feed millers in Singapore and Malaysia. In 2011, the business, still a single man operation, was handed to the 2nd generation. As there is negligible farming in Singapore, expansion into regional countries is the only alternative to grow the business.

In 2016, MLF Ingredients Sdn Bhd was incorporated and in 2019, we obtained our animal feed manufacturing license in Johor, Malaysia. Since then, companies under the Lam Tak Group expanded and now owns 2 feed factories in Singapore and Malaysia, a fleet of delivery trucks and an insect farm in Johor. We employ about 50 staff and is still growing rapidly.

We export our products to regional countries namely Korea, Taiwan, China, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, India and Japan. In 2021, we processed approximately 6,500 metric tons of food waste, such as downgraded milk powder, expired bakery products, soy waste, wheat flour, potato flakes and etc into animal feed raw ingredients.

We work with feed millers across various Asian countries to formulate the right nutrition for their farmed animals. By doing so, we value-add to our customers by giving them the best feed conversion ratio, thus achieving lower farming cost. We promote the use of our organic fertilizer from our Black Soldier Fly (“BSF”) insect farming to both farms and individuals, which is more environmentally friendly, compared to chemical fertilizer.

We procured downgraded food, food factory waste products and food distress cargo worldwide. We are vendors to many food and soft commodity multi- nationals namely Cargill, Olam, Nestle, Arla Ingredients, Fonterra, Kerry Ingredients and etc. Depending on circumstances, we either trade such cargo internationally or we further process it in our factories. In having this flexibility, we “optimize” the value of such food waste and bring the highest cost saving to our vendors and customers.

In addition to manufacturing and farming, we also distribute food by-products from flour mills, soy sauce and snack factories. By doing point-to-point distribution, we optimize the supply chain and ensure the by-products are delivered fresh to our end customers, whom are either farms or feed mills. Our business model is multi-facet, encompassing international trading, manufacturing, product distribution and farming. It is a challenge for a SME to undertake such multi-facet business. However, in so doing, we built a business that is highly sustainable, resilient, and laid a solid foundation for future rapid growth. In recognition of our contribution and growth, we won the Emerging Enterprise Award (sustainability) in 2020, jointly organized by the OCBC and Singapore Business Times.

While we began and built our business mostly from the business-to-business arena, of late, we also worked towards bringing our products to end-consumers. By so doing, we reduce the sales channel and bring cost and product benefits directly to our end consumers. During the COVIC-19 pandemic, we tapped on digital media and online platforms to launch our organic fertilizer and dried Black Soldier Fly (“BSF”) larva, under the Orgsome brand. We certainly are proud to bring our products to consumers during this pandemic, where they get some relieve and console from gardening activities and their pets.

About half of our company’s board of directors and senior management team are held by ladies below the age of 40. We believe in encompassing ladies with high responsibilities, and they had also demonstrated their ability to manage both their career and family well. Although a small company, our staff and workers come from diverse nationality, such as Malaysia, Singapore, China, Indonesia, Vietnam and Pakistan. We believe a good mix of people from various countries can bring more vibrance to our setup.

We strongly believe in investing in the best technology and building the know- how in our business. When we started our BSF farming, we were saddled with many issues such as inconsistent egg production, wrong nutrition formulation and etc. Upon rigorous international research, in 2019, we finally collaborated the intellectual property rights with Henan Agricultural University, for a value of approximately USD 1.5 million. With the know-how, we finally managed all the hurdle and succeeded in achieving world-class standard in producing BSF eggs, with optimal combination of space, feed nutrition, air humidity and temperature.

We are ardent advocates in building an environmentally friendly business, have the highest safety standard and continuously improve ourselves. For instance, we installed solar panels in our factory and reduce electricity consumption from the grid by more than 65%. We invested in anti-spark motors, industrial vacuum, High Volume Low Speed fans (HVLS) and ventilation systems. Our forklift and lift-trucks are all electricity powered, thereby reducing carbon footprint. For animal feed manufacturers, all these are considered luxurious as we belong to a low margin industry segment. Nevertheless, we opined that it is the employer’s responsibility to give our staff a comfortable and safe working environment. We also obtained our GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) in 2020.

Having laid a good foundation, we are prepared for our next phase of development – engaging on bigger and more technology advance projects. We are currently collaborating with industry experts that have patented IP, using thermochemical conversion process in cyclonic reactor to process organic waste such as from palm fruits, into bio-fuels. Upon success, we expect to deliver huge impact on such organic waste recovery, as waste products from industries such as palm oil milling is a major environmental issue.

To grow more rapidly, we are in the process of engaging in M&A (merges and acquisitions) and forming of joint ventures with like-minded companies. We believe with our regional presence, an experienced management team and our proven success, we can add value to our future partners. Our relentless pursuit for excellence should also ensure that our future business is sustainable and profitable.

Lam Tak Group of companies is currently lead by James Wee, age 52. Prior to this, he has more than 25 years’ experience in business management and development in MNC and local companies. He also founded two startup in both Singapore and Shanghai. He earned his Bachelor of Science (Hons) from National University of Singapore in 1995 and subsequently obtained his MBA from INSEAD in 2001. He is assisted by a team of professional with vast experience in food recycling industry, animal feed production, corporate and capital markets. We are confident that our proven track record will bring us to next milestone by tapping on the capital market soon.

The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.

We are proud to show that undertaking environmental projects and helping to reduce carbon footprint through reducing food waste can be profitable and can also grow globally. It is important to tap on various types of technology and how-how and apply them effectively and efficiently.

Optimizing the whole supply chain and understanding each country’s dynamics is also critical to our success. In winning the Golden Bull Award, we hope to deliver this message loud and clear. We would love to see more and more companies come together with us, and make our Earth a more green and sustainable place to live in.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the recent Ukraine war has awakened the world on the importance of food security and the resilience of the supply chain. We are fortunate and proud of our business in developing circular economies and contributing to food security in both Malaysia and Singapore. We have also proven that with the right business strategy and execution, food waste management can also be a profitable business and that can bring us far and beyond.

The wining of the Golden Bull Award 2022 is highly meaningful to us. It will put us in spot-like to attract more companies and partners to work with us, to bring the best value and best solution to food waste management. Together, we can further contribute to building a greener and cleaner world.
